Joan is passionate about social justice and law reform and believes that the first step towards social change is understanding how laws impact vulnerable members of society.  This passionate interest is the foundation for her academic work.

Her research explores how laws operate in society and the social justice implications of laws.  She has a particular interest in social justice and human rights issues for older adults. Her PhD dissertation examines how a British Columbia law, intended to protect vulnerable adults from harm, is implemented in practice.
